Opening the concert with the short but rousing "Gloria in Ex-celsis Deo," by Martin Shaw, the choir set the stage for Per-golesi's "Stabat Mater. Joined By Ensemble For this major selection of the evening the women of the choir were joined by a string ensemble consisting of Johannes Fos-sum and Marjorie Smith, violins; Eric Schee, viola; and Leigh Elder, violin-cello. Ruth Anderson was the piano accompanist. "Stabat Mater," composed for two-part chorus of women's voices, calls for a careful balance of voices, tonal blended and phrasing. Mastery of these "musts" was evident from the opening chorus to the "Amen." Doris Phillips Severson sang the soprano solo passages with a warmth and style wholly pleasing to the audience.
