The diplomas also may be awarded posthumously to the families of deceased veterans. Individual school boards will decided on how the requests are to be handled, said Moen, a retired Navy officer with 22 years of active duty. In order to get the process started, however, it is up to the individual to apply to the school board, he said. Moen had an older brother who was killed in action in World War II, but said that was not the main reason he sponsored the bill.

I never really knew him, Moen said of his deceased brother, Ernest Moen, who was a student at Whitehall High School when he left home to join the Army. He was killed on Christmas Day 1944. Veterans from other states have contacted Moen, expressing an interest in establishing similar programs in their states, he said. By TERRY BURT Of the Tribune staff Thousands of older Wisconsin military veterans who left school early during wartime may be eligible to receive their high school diplomas if a state bill is signed into law later this week. There is really no way of knowing how many veterans this may affect.

There are no specific records that address this, but it would undoubtedly be in the thousands, said Terry Tuschen, a legislative aide for state Sen. Rod Moen, D-Whitehall, who introduced the bill in the Senate. Moen said the bill, approved by the Legislature in late March, likely will be signed into law Wednesday by Gov. Tommy Thompson. The bill is strongly endorsed by the Veterans of Foreign Wars organization and school district adminis- trators, Moen said.

Eileen was born on Nov. 29, 1921, in Dorchester, the daughter of William L. and Marie (McDonald) ONeill. She graduated from Aquinas High School and St. Francis School of Nursing, both in La Crosse.

She was a first lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps during World War II in Europe. She worked as a nurse at Smith Memorial Hospital, Decorah, Iowa, and in extended care at Peoples Memorial Hospital, Independence, Iowa, and the Mental Health Institute, Independence, Iowa. Eileen lived for and loved her children and grandchildren. Survivors include her children and grandchildren: Colleen (Paul) Gokey of Prairie du Chien, Sheila (Mark) Cannon of Iowa City, Iowa, Kevin (Diane) Casey of Cuba City, Timothy C. Casey of Van Horne, Iowa, Terrance (Paula) Casey of Dallas, Texas, Mary Catherine Casey of Minneapolis, and Bridget (Dean) Krempges of Independence, Iowa; 15 grandchildren; three sisters, Genevieve Austin of Janesville, Sister Catherine ONeill of La Crosse and Marietta (Bill) Halpin of Prairie du Chien; and four brothers, John J.

(Dorothy) ONeill of Dubuque, Iowa, Father William ONeill of St. Paul, Robert F. (Agnes) ONeill of Janesville and Gerald S. (Carol) ONeill of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis. She was preceded in death by her parents; a granddaughter, Kathleen Casey; a sister, Margaret Fraunfelder; and a brother, Thomas ONeill.

-Jeanette (Rose) Thorson, 69, formerly of La Crosse, passed away on Saturday, April 2, 2000, in Las Vegas. She was born in La Crosse to Lawrence and Mable Rose. She married Guilford Thorson in La Crosse. They moved to Kenosha, in 1960, and after Guilfords retirement, they moved to Las Vegas. Jeanette is survived by her sons, Guilford (Linda) Thorson of Wheatland, Stanley (Wanda) Thorson of Kenosha, Jim Thorson of Kenosha and Michael Thorson of Union Grove, daughters, Barbara Esquirrel of Whitney, Texas, and Shirley (Mike) Blatter of Kenosha; brothers, Bob (Sara) Rose of Apple Valley, and Jack (Virginia) Rose of Merrillan, and sisters, Phyllis Lemke of Melbourne, Alice Sherry of Onalaska, and Corrine Craig of Gaylord, Mich.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) A Presbyterian ministry student who police believe severed a gas line in a Richland Center church parsonage in a suicide attempt has died of his injuries. Mark Boyer, 38, was badly burned in an explosion March 25 at the church parsonage next to Town and County Presbyterian Church in Richland Center, where he was a youth pastor. Boyer was in critical condition until his death Saturday night, University of Wisconsin Hospital spokeswoman Janet Cooper said. Richland Center police said two gas pipes leading to the homes water heater were severed, apparently by Boyer.

Leonard H. Schmidt APPLETON, Wis. Leonard H. Schmidt, 90, of Appleton, went to be with his Lord and Saviour Sunday morning, April 2, 2000. Leonard was born June 8, 1909, in Charles City, Iowa, to the late Henry and Georgia (Haskins) Schmidt Sleqzer.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Rosalene Schmidt of Milwaukee; a daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Dennis McGinley of Appleton; four grandchildren, Dale (Janet) Schmidt of Appleton, Dawn (Don) Lewan of Fox River Grove, 111., Dan (Jane) Schmidt of Hustisford, and Danielle Schmidt of Mil-wakee; three great-grandchildren, Barry Schmidt of Apple-ton, and Heather and Courtney Lewan of Fox River Grove; a sister, Florence Keifer of Charles City, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Maxine; and two brothers, Harold and Leslie Schmidt. A memorial service of celebration will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, April 15, 2000, at Sand Lake Wesleyan Church, Onalaska, with Rev. James Maness officiating.

Friends may call from 8 a.m. until the time of services in the funeral home. i i Lloyd P. Gaustad HOUSTON, Minn. -Lloyd Gaustad, 78, of rural Houston, died Monday, April 10, 2000, at his home.

He was born Feb. 21, 1922, in Caledonia, to Peter and Senell (Gunderson) Gaustad. Lloyd served in the U.S. Merchant Marines and the U.S. Army during WWII.

On April 6, 1947, he married Violet Kruckow at St. Johns Evangelical Lutheran Church in Caledonia, and they celebrated 53 years of marriage this month. Lloyd farmed in rural Houston all his life. In addi- tion to farming, he also was employed as an auto mechanic in the La Crosse and Winona areas. Lloyd was a member of the Arnet Sheldon American Legion Post 423 of Houston, and a longtime member of St.

Johns Evangelical Lutheran Church of Caledonia. He enjoyed collecting antique tractors and spending time with his family. Lloyd was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Survivors include his wife, Violet; two daughters, Sandra (Alan) Meyer of Caledonia and Carol Jean Felten of Houston; a son, Roger Lloyd (Robin) of Plymouth, 10 grandchildren: Alison, Kristie, Lindsey, Abby and Samantha Meyer; Nicole, Rhonda and Tonya; and Senell and Evan Gaustad; a sister, Margaret (Robert) Anderson of Houston; and a brother, Kenneth Jann) Gaustad of Hokah, Minn. Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Linda; a grandson; and a brother, Russell.

Funeral services will be Thursday, April 13, at 11 a.m., from St. Johns Evangelical Lutheran Church, 650 N. Kingston Caledonia. Rev. Tom Schultz will officiate.

Shane attended St. Stephens Kiddie College in Horicon, Wis. He was a member of Christian Life Fellowship Church, Mayville. He received his swimming cer- tificate from the YMCA, and enjoyed archery, karate, piano and fishing. He loved Power Rangers and Super Heroes.
