Hilbert A. Berg, 72, of Barre Mills, died Monday, Feb. 7, 1994, at St. 1 Francis Medical Center, La Crosse. He was born Jan.

24, 1922, in the town of Burns to Gustave and Hulda (Jandt) Berg. He married Marion Hoppmann Sept. 15, 1948, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Barre Mills. He farmed in Barre Mills since 1949 and on his present farm since 1951.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Barre Mills, and the church men's club, and was a member of the church male choir since 1946. He was presently serving his 27th year on the Barre town board and was a past board member of the Farm Bureau, Guernsey Breeders, St. John's School, St. John's Cemetery and La Crosse County DHIA.

He was a 4-H leader and an original and current member of the La Crosse County Pet Barn Committee. He is survived by his wife, Marion, three sons, Curtis (Pam) of West Salem, Kenneth (Lynette) of Barre Mills and Ronald (Marcia) of Westminster, S.C.; seven grandchildren, Jennifer, Matthew, Tracey, Travis, Tanya, Tiffany and Brandon; six sisters, Renata (Chester) Bushek of Bangor, Adela (Norbert) Hueppchen of Plymouth, Margaret (Robert) Kersten of Racine, Laurine (Harley) Solberg of Onalaska, Vivian Havens of Bangor and Marcella (Edward) Richmond of Rockland; a brother, Norman (Phyllis) of Bangor; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Leona Berg. Funeral services will be Thursday Feb. 10, 1994, at 11 a.m.

Rostad SPRING GROVE, Minn. Julius N. Rostad, 89, of Spring Grove, passed away Sunday Feb. 6, 1994 at Tweeten Lutheran Health Care Center, Spring Grove. He was born Feb.

6, 1905 in Houston County, Minn. to Nels and Lena (Eliason) Rostad. He married Alice R. Skauge Dec. 1, 1925.

He attended Stone School in Yucatan township. The couple lived in Austin, for two years and have spent the rest of their lives in the Spring Grove area. He farmed in rural Spring Grove and then retired and did various carpentry jobs in the area. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church of Blackhammer. He had served as a trustee of the church and was on the Blackhammer school board.

He is survived by his wife, Alice; three sons, Norton (Marjorie) and Merle (Loretta), both of Spring Grove, and Lyle (Karen) of Rochester, three daughters, Mrs. John (Elmira) Steigerwald of Austin, Arlene Bain of Cedar Rapids, lowa, and Mrs. Robert (Judy) Baumbach of Spring Grove; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; four brothers, Leo, Sidney, and Allan, all of Houston, and Carl of Spring Grove; and two sisters, Leona Winjum of Spring Grove and Mrs. Clifford (Pearl) Lee of Caledonia, Minn. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Miner, and a sister, Viola.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church of Blackhammer, rural Spring Grove. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Rev. Jerome Diers will officiate.

CLOUD, Minn. Suzanne "Sue" R. Schwanberg, 62, of St. Cloud, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 1994, at St.

Cloud Hospital, St. Cloud, Minn. She was born Feb. 27, 1931, in La Crosse to Leon and Ruth (Males) Miller. She married Glen Schwanberg Sept.

1, 1950, in La Crosse. She was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. She was employed by St. Cloud University Health Services from Oct. 25, 1978, until her retirement on March 3, 1993.

Sue was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, where she was a member and treasurer of St. Anne's Altar Guild and a former member of vestry. Sue was also active as a volunteer for the St. Cloud Hospital Hospice Program.

Survivors include her husband, Glenn; daughters and sons, Jackie of Milwaukee, Jennifer of St. Cloud, Jeffery of St. Cloud, Jerry of Boise, Idaho, and Jon of Rochester, her mother, Ruth Miller of Decorah, Iowa; a brother, Stewart Miller of Verona, a sister, Nan Gray of Decorah, Iowa; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father and a daughter, Jill. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Feb.

9, 1994, at 4:30 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, St. Cloud. Rev.

Cloud, Minn. Ardelle Herrick Pavela Ardelle Herrick Pavela, 71, of 930 Johnson died Monday, Feb. 7, 1994, in St. Francis Medical Center. She was born July 31, 1922 in Bangor to Hal and Asenath (Page) Herrick.

She married Sigmund J. Pavela Aug. 12, 1946, in La Crosse. For many years Ardelle and her family lived in the Bangor and Burns area and later moved to Holmen. Following her marriage she moved to La Crosse.

She graduated from the Chicago School of Cosmetology. In addition to her husband she is survived by three daughters, Karen (Jerry) Osteraas of Madison, Vickie Opfer of Tampa, and Patricia (Byron) Hill of Auburn, three sons, Thomas (Linda) of San Jose, and David (Linda) and Michael (Tina), both of La Crosse; and eleven grandchildren, Amy and Jeremy Osteraas, Douglas and Gregory Opfer, Sadie, Caitlin and Lauren Hill, and Michelle, Stephanie, Jason and Kristen Pavela. She was preceded in death by a brother. Funeral services will be Thursday, Feb. 10, at 10 a.m in the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse, and 10:30 a.m.

Devine Opal V. Devine, 79, formerly of 2038 Wood died Saturday, Feb. 5, 1994, at Bethany-St. Joseph Health Care Center. She was born Nov.

17, 1914, in Vernon County, to Elmer and Julia (Sorenson) Sheldon. She worked at Lutheran Hospital before her retirement. She married Raymond "Jack" Devine on Oct. 27, 1934, at Lansing, Iowa. She is survived by her husband, Raymond two sons, Robert (Patricia) Devine of Westby, and Thomas (Martha) Devine of Walla Walla, two daughters, Judith Peden of La Crosse and Sharon (James) Schultz of Onalaska; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Donovan (Mary Ann) Sheldon of Coon Valley; a sister, Edith (Lyle) Olson of La Crescent; and a sister-in-law, Etta Sheldon of La Crosse.

She is preceded in death by two brothers, a sister and a great -grandson. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9, at Trinity Lutheran Church. The Revs.

Ted Dewald and Ron Nowland will officiate. Burial will be in Mormon Coulee Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, at Woodruff Funeral Home, 4239 Mormon Coulee Road; and from 10:30 a.m. until the time of services Wednesday, at the church.

Arthur Elliott Hart EL PASO, Texas Arthur Elliott Hart, 98, a resident of El Paso, Texas, died Jan. 1, 1994. He was born Feb. 2, 1895, in Brentwood, Long Island, to Frederick Augustus and Kate Cornell Hart. On July 2, 1933, in Hyde Park, N.Y., he married the former Amanda Travis, who predeceased him.

Mr. Hart formerly resided in Stratford, and San Antonio, Texas. A Sergeant during World War Mr. Hart was a member of the Veterans of the 7th Regiment and Veterans of World War I. He received a Purple Heart and a commendation medal for the 75th anniversary of World War I from the Veterans Administration and the Robert McCormack Foundation.

He was gassed on the Hindenburg Line. Survivors include two daughters, Lila Hart Seager of La Crosse and Barbara Hart Decker of El Paso, Texas; and six grandsons. Funeral services were held at Holy Spirit Episcopal Church, El Paso. Graveside services were at the family plot in Union Cemetery, Hyde Park, N.Y. Hart, First Congregational Church, Main at Losey La Crosse, 54601. Karmen Lynn Mercer FERRYVILLE, Wis. Karmen Lynn Mercer, the infant daughter of Opal Matlock and Charles Mercer, was born Feb. 1, 1994 at 6:21 p.m. in St.

Francis Medical Center. She died peacefully February 2, 1994 at 11:20 p.m. She is survived by her parents, Opal and Charles of Ferryville; paternal grandparents, Wayne and Yvone Mercer of Magnolia, maternal grandparents, Ralph Jr. and Barbara Torgerson of Ferryville, Charles and Deanna Matlock of McNabb, Ill; paternal great-grandparents, Ward and Nina Mercer of Oglesby, Chet and Marie Clary of Magnolia; maternal great-grandmother, Opal Zinke of Carbondale, Ill; paternal great-great-grandmother, Josephine Angello of Oglesby. Karmen is also survived by aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 7, at 11 a.m. in the Larson Funeral Home, De Soto. Rev. Russell Bode officiated with burial in the Walnut Mound Cemetery, Retreat.

Wyvil Gilbertson, 90, of the Franciscan Care Center, Onalaska, and formerly of Slayton, went to be with the Lord Sunday, Feb.

6, 1994. He was born Oct. 20, 1903, in Murray, County, Gilbertson. He to Andrew married Elsie Haring June 2, 1935, in Slayton, Minn. He is survived by two daughters, Patricia (Harold) Peterson of Onalaska, and Minnie Louise "Dolly" (Gary) Sharp of Walsenburg, three sons, Harvey (Cathy) Gilbertson of Phoenix, (Carla) Gilbertson of Pittsburg, and David (Marsha) Gilbertson of Eckert, seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He is survived by a sister i in Minneapolis. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Elsie, six brothers, two sisters and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 9 in Jobe Family Funeral Home, Onalaska, with visitation at 10 a.m. Burial will be in French Island Cemetery.
