B-6 La Crosse Tribune, Sunday, July 30, 1989 Town mourns farm family Obituaries As a one-mile procession of mourners followed the hearses through town to a country cemetery, Menominee residents stood by their front windows and watched. Some stood outside in the rain and others pulled their cars off the road, quietly paying tribute. The Theuerkauf farm has passed from father to son for, more than 100 years. Now the only direct adult male heir is, Carl's third son, Bill, who was badly injured in an auto accident three years ago. (AP) A gray rain fell Saturday as a rural community buried five farmers who died trying to save one another in a manure pit. Services for Carl Theuerkauf, 65, his sons Carl 37, and Tom, 28 and his grandson Daniel, 15, were held first at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Menominee.

Beneath red and white carnations, their four brass coffins lined the front of the small church. Mourners, overflowing into the hallway, sang "Nearer My God to Thee." Carl Theuerkauf would have turned 66 today. The funeral for Carl's cousin, Bjjl Hofer, 63, took place four hours later at Faith Lutheran Church across the river in Marinette, Wis. The five suffocated Wednesday morning trying to save each other at the Theuerkauf family dairy barn in Menominee County. Sheriff's officials believe Bill Hofer, a paid employee of the farm, went into the pit first to unblock a drain, perhaps and collapsed after breathing methane fumes.

Each one followed to rescue the man before, until they all were gone. "What forced them down into that pit? It certainly wasn't fame or glory. It was love," the Rev. Leroy Ade told more than 200 people who jammed the church for the Theuerkaufs' funeral. "It was true love for God, love for Christ, and love for a fellow man that caused what we termed a tragedy," Ade said.

He ended with a statement to the men in the caskets: "We will see you again." The farming tragedy shook more than family and close friends of the Theuerkaufs. County extension service director Richard Breyer said the entire area was stunned by the deaths.
