Balfany SUN CITY, Ariz. Francis M. Balfany, 77, of Sun City, died Thursday, May 6, 1999, in Sunview Care Center. He was born June 25, 1921, in Wanda, the son of Albert and Esther Belke Balfany. Francis married Genesse Jenny Reschke on Jan.

14, 1948, in Iowa. He was a veteran of WWII serving with the U.S. Army. Francis was formerly the owner of Balfanys Service Station, La Crosse, Wis. He was a former warehouse manager for A.J.

Sweet Co. and retired in 1972 as District Sales Manager for G. Heileman Brewing La Crosse, Wis. Francis and Jenny moved from Beloit, to Sun City, in 1986. Francis was a member of St.

Christophers Episcopal Church, the American Legion Post 52, La Crosse, Wis. and B.P.O. Elks Lodge of Sun City, Ariz. Survivors include his wife, Genesse A. Jenny Balfany of Sun City, four grandchildren, Amy Lynn Balfany, and Amanda, Rebecca and Genesse Seefeld; his sister, Florence (Leo) Lemke of Aurora, his brother Ford Balfany of La Crosse, Wis.

He was predeceased by his parents; his son, Jim Balfany; his daughter, Judy Balfany McDowell; grandaughter Baby Me Dowell; sisters Bonnie Mason, Alberta Heath and Alma Bischer; brothers Russell, Robert, Floyd and Elmo; and a dear daughter-in-law Janice Balfany Seefeldt. Francis will be missed by many nieces, nephews and friends. Memorial service will be held in La Crosse, Wis. Saturday, May 15, 1999 at 11 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, Ninth and Main Streets, La Crosse, Wis.

85351. Arthur E. Art Nelson ELROY, Wis. Arthur E. Art Nelson, 66, of Elroy died on Monday, May 10, 1999, at his residence.

He was born on Nov. 10, 1932, in Mauston to Andrew and Valina (Halverson) Nelson. He graduated from Elroy High School in 1949. Art had served in the United States Army for two years. On Oct.

6, 1956, he was united in marriage to Donna Dunlap in the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elroy. Art owned and operated the Nelson Auto Service since 1950, was a member of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Elroy Area Advancement Corp. Survivors include his wife Donna of Elroy; four children, Timothy (Nancy) Nelosn of La Crescent, Lynn (Dennis) Lawrey of LaGrange, Andrea (Jay) Witt of Kendall and Brian (Jody) Nelson of Elroy; and 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 13, 1999, at 11 a.m.

at the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elroy with Rev. Conrad Prell officiating. Burial will follow in the Elroy City Cemetery. Friends may call at the Picha Funeral Home, Elroy on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. and at the church on Thursday from 10 a.m.

until 11 a.m. Nellie O. Peterson Nellie O. Peterson, 90, of La Crosse, died Sunday, May 9, 1999, at Hillview Health Care Center. She was born in Vernon County on Dec.

11, 1908, to Gabriel and Sophie (Sebion) Olson. She was a legal secretary for the Smyth Law Office before her retirement. She was a member of Our Saviours Lutheran Church, O.E.S. Chapter 22, life member in La Crosse and an active volunteer at Bethany Lutheran Home. She is survived by two sons, Donald (Rose) Peterson of Nitro, W.Va.

and Richard Peterson of Zion, one daughter, Barbara (Glenn) Lepley of Fort Atkinson, eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Gladys Bethurem of La Crosse; nieces, nephews and many dear friends. She is preceded in death by her husband Clinton, an infant son, sisters, Sylvia and Mabel, and four brothers. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, May 18, 1999, at 11 a.m. at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Sixth and Division Streets. The Rev.

Rachel Thorson Mithelman will officiate. Following cremation, private inurnment will be at Mormon Coulee Memorial Park. Family and friends may call at the church on Tuesday, May 18, 1999, from 10:30 a.m. until time of service. Memorials may be given to Our Saviours Lutheran Church or Gundersen Hospice Program.

The Woodruff Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Glenn M. Northcott ELROY, Wis. Glenn M. Northcott, 82, of Elroy, died on Sunday, May 9, 1999, at his residence.

He was born oh Sept. 8, 1916, in New Lisbon, to Glenn and Hilda (Jacobson) Northcott. On Dec. 31, 1941, he was united in marriage to Joyce Kuderer in Wilton. Glenn lived in Elroy most of his life, where he had been a truck driver and then owned and operated Northcott Motors gas station and Ford car dealership.

He was a member of the St. Patricks Catholic Church. Survivors include his wife, Joyce of Elroy; six children, Sharyn (Robert) Meyer of Milwaukee, Carlene (Brian) Larson of Muskego, Lynette (Gary) Heath of Oregon, Janell (William) Bowersox of Muskego, Douglas (Vicki) Northcott of Elroy and Kara (Mark) Goldader of Cedarburg; 17 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 1 sister, Gwendolyn Francis of Zanesville, Ohio; one half sister, Betty Ramer of New Lisbon; and two half brothers, Jim Northcott of New Lisbon and William (Bernice) Northcott of New Lisbon. He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Leny; and half brother, Robert. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 12, 1999, at 11 a.m., at the St.

Patricks Catholic Church, Elroy, with Father James McNamee officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Patricks Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call at the Picha Funeral Home, Elroy, today starting at 4 p.m., with a Bible vigil at 8:15 p.m. and at the church on Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m.

Loretta Ryan WAUKON, Iowa Loretta Ryan, 102, of Waukon, died Sunday, May 9, 1999, in Veterans Memorial Hospital, Waukon, after a brief illness. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Patricks Catholic Church and burial will be in St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery, both Waukon.

Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. today, with a 3 p.m. scripture service and 4:30 p.m. rosary, at the Hanson Funeral Home, Waukon. Gertrude Anastasia Schulte WAUKON, Iowa Gertrude Anastasia Schulte, 82, 904 First Ave.

Waukon, Iowa, died Saturday, May 8, 1999, in Waukon Good Samaritan Center. She was born on Feb. 22, 1917, to Michael Burke and Ella Burke (Byrnes) at the family farm in Hanover township. She attended St. Patricks High School in Waukon.

She married Henry Hank Schulte on Feb. 4, 1937, at St. Marys in Hanover. They farmed in Hanover until retirement, when they moved to Waukon. Gertrude was a homemaker and a member of St.

Patricks Church, Waukon, and its Rosary Society. She is survived by children: Doris and Bob Eglseder, Mavis and Verdine Berns, Eileen and Bernard Berns, all of Waukon, Gary and Janis of and Bill Collins of Wauna-kee, Rick and Sue of Dorchester, Rita and Bob Irons of Waukon, and Wayne and Jean of Dorchester; 27 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and sisters Mary McCormick of Waukon and Margaret Grohall of La Crosse. She is preceded in death by Gerald Michael Schulte who died in infancy; sisters, Sister Mary Jude, Catherine Griffin, Rita Lid-diard and Monica Sweeney; and brothers, James, Michael and John. Services were 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 10, 1999, at St.

Patricks Catholic Church in Waukon. Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg, Father Henry Charipar and Father Vincent Simon officiated. Burial was in St. Marys in Hanover township, Waukon.

Visitation was 3 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, May 9, 1999, at Hanson Funeral Home, Waukon. Pallbearers were her grandsons Brad Berns, Brent Berns, Bryan Berns, Eric Schulte, Scott Irons, David Irons, Shawn Schulte and Reggie Schulte. Honorary pallbearers were her granddaughters. Freida E.

Luedke DAKOTA, Minn. Freida E. Luedke, 89, of Dakota, passed away on Sunday, May 9, 1999, at the Bethany-Riverside Nursing Home in La Crosse. She was born on June 20, 1909, in Winona County to Elmer and Meta (Selke) Gile. She married Harry Luedke on June 30, 1925, in Winona, Minn.

He preceded her in death in 1978. Freida is survived by four daughters, La Vonne Beach of La Crescent, Berdonna (Earl) Nottleman of La Moille, Norma (Roy) Swett of Dakota, and Jean Trocins-ki of Dakota, 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Harry, she was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Alfred, Rudy and Frank Gile; two sisters, Mrs. Cora (John) Papen-fuss and Mrs. Agnes (Ernest) Papenfuss; one grandson and one granddaughter in infancy; and two sons-in-law, Francis Beach and Arlen Trocinski.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 12, 1999, at 11 a.m. at St. Johns Evangelical. Lutheran Church, Nodine, with Rev. Erling Carmichael officiating.

Burial will be in the Hiler Cemetery, rural Nodine. Friends may call at the Schu-macher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crescent on today from 7 to 9 p.m. and at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Francis Otto Bud Vieth SPARTA, Wis.

Francis Otto Bud Vieth, of Sparta, died on his 80th birthday in Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Friday in Trinity Lutheran Church, and burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, both in Sparta. A complete obituary will follow. Baxa Keitha M. Baxa, 81, of La Crosse, died on Monday, May 10, 1999, at Bethany Riverside. She was born July 8, 1917, at Lawrenceville, N.Y., to Walter and Catherine (McKee) Cooper. She graduated from A. Barton Hepburn School of Nursing, Odgensburg, N.Y., with an R.N.

degree. She worked at Port Chester General Hospital in New York and as a psychiatric nurse at the Silver Hill Foundation in New Canaan, Conn. In 1944, she joined the Army Nurse Corps and served as a first lieutenant with the 235th Field Hospital, stationed in Marseilles, France, during the Battle of the Bulge. She married Milton M. Baxa in 1946, in Detroit, Mich.

In 1952, she and her husband moved to La Crosse, where she worked at the Lutheran Hospital as a private duty nurse and was involved in setting up the first renal dialysis unit in La Crosse. During the Cuban migration to the U.S., she worked at Fort McCoy as the family clinic supervisor. Keitha was a charter member of the Town and Country Garden Club and a certified flower show judge. She was a member of Embroiders Guild of America; a past board member of the La Crosse Home for Children; and a volunteer for the Red Cross Bloodmobile and the American Cancer Society. She is survived by her husband, Milton; by a son, Ronald of Kenosha; a daughter, Kathryn (William) Bergman of Eau Claire; two sisters, Maxine (Fran) Pridell of Copenhagen, N.Y., and Dorothy Tarter of Sacramento, and two brothers, Harland (Barb) Cooper of Verona, N.Y., and Robert (Sally) Cooper of Copenhagen, N.Y.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Ronald; and two sisters, Doris Stevenson and Laura Horn. Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church. The Reverend John Klein will officiate. Burial will be at a later date at Copenhagen, N.Y.

Friends may call at the Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 1425 Jackson Street, La Crosse, Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. The family suggests that memorials be sent to the Gun-dersen Lutheran Medical Foundation. Melvern Gander SOLDIERS GROVE, Wis. -Melvern Gander, 77, of R.2, Soldiers Grove, passed away on Sunday, May 9, 1999, at his home. He was born on June 26, 1921, in the town of Clayton, Crawford County, to Milton and Letha (Hoffman) Gander.

He married Betty Ann Jennings on June 26, 1947. He farmed on the family farm (a Century Farm) all his life and also did mechanic work. He was a member of the North Clayton United Methodist Church. He enjoyed and was deeply learned in the ways of Nature. He made maple syrup with his family.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Brent Gander; and three brothers, Winston, Arthur and Milton. He is survived by his wife, Betty of Soldiers Grove; three sons, Gary Gander of Elgin, Dave (Kathy) Gander of Soldiers Grove and Don (Donna) Gander of Janesville; four daughters, Kathy (Guillermo) Hoyos of La Crosse, Peggy (Doug) Schoenfeld of Holmen, Jane (Bill) Bauman of DeWitt, Iowa, and Joan Premo of Columbus, 17 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one brother, James (Phyllis) Gander of East Grand Forks, Minn. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 12, at 11 a.m.

at the North Clayton United Methodist Church. Pastor Clyde Ham will officiate and burial will be in the North Clayton Cemetery. Friends may call at the Sime Funeral Home in Readstown today from 4 to 8 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m.; and on Wednesday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of services.
